What is counselling, and how does it work?
Counselling is a therapeutic relationship between the client and the counsellor. The counsellor actively listens to the client's concerns, and together, they set achievable goals for the client to work toward. The counsellor provides guidance and teaches skills to help clients attain these goals. They also regularly assess the progress and evolution of the client’s concerns and adjust what needs to be done.
Who is counselling for?
Counselling benefits everyone, but the honest answer is that it's for anyone ready. It can be challenging, and you may discover things about yourself. So, anyone open to learning, growing, and being honest with themselves is prepared for counselling. Even if you feel you’re not quite ready, that’s okay; we can take our time together.
What happens in a typical session?
A session lasts 50 minutes. After our initial session, where we will complete the intake form and identify our objectives, the next session will focus on assessing the skills you possess and identifying any skills you may lack. We will also discuss habits that could slow our progress toward achieving our goals. We will also explore the purposes of these habits and look for alternative solutions that can achieve those purposes. Additionally, we can work on changing our thoughts and inner dialogue to support our journey better.
How long does counselling take?
I don't have a straightforward answer to this question, as it varies depending on the individual and their specific concerns. Factors such as your personal benefits and financial situation also play a role. Being open about these issues can help the counsellor address your primary concerns and work collaboratively to enhance both your mental health and financial well-being.
Will my information be kept confidential?
Your records and charts will be securely stored in a virtual counseling system that is fully HIPAA, PIPEDA, and GDPR-compliant, ensuring your privacy and confidentiality. However, there are four circumstances where confidentiality may need to be broken:
1.
Serious and Immediate Risk of Harm: If there is a significant, immediate risk of harm to you or others.
2.
Child Abuse or Neglect: If there is suspicion or evidence of abuse or neglect involving a child.
3.
Court Orders: If required by law or a court order during legal proceedings.
4.
Client Consent: If you provide explicit consent to share specific information.
These exceptions are in place to ensure safety and comply with legal and ethical standards, and they will always be approached with care and transparency.
Do I need a referral to start counselling?
No, you do not. However, some referrals sometimes allow you discounts through some organizations, or your doctor or nurse practitioner might have access to resources that can be helpful for your concerns, like diagnoses or financial support related to specific mental health diagnoses or concerns
How do I know if counselling is right for me?
I truly believe that counselling is always a valuable choice and that everyone can benefit from therapy at some point in their lives. That said, I understand that not everyone feels comfortable with the words therapy or counselling, so let’s reframe it by exploring some of the reasons people might choose to begin this journey:
1.
They’ve exhausted their personal resources and are looking for new perspectives.
2.
They’re navigating a crisis.
3.
They feel ready for change.
4.
They want to talk to someone who is unbiased and objective.
5.
They’re seeking healing.
6.
They sense that something feels off but can’t pinpoint it.
Whether for clarity, support, or transformation, counselling offers a space for exploration and growth.
What if I don’t feel comfortable with my therapist?
That is an excellent question! Finding the right therapist is much like finding the perfect cup of tea—it’s a personal journey that might take some time. As therapists, we bring our authentic selves to the table but know we can’t be everyone’s favourite blend. You may need to sample a few flavours before discovering what suits you. And sometimes, the tea you’ve enjoyed for years might no longer feel right, and it’s time to try something new. Therapy, like tea, evolves with your needs and tastes.
How often do I need to attend sessions?
The frequency of attendance varies based on individual concerns and personal preferences. Some people may attend sessions intensely a couple of days a week, while
others might come in only once a month. Generally, individuals start by attending once a week or every other week. However, maintaining a consistent and committed relationship with your counsellor will yield the best results.
Does counseling really work?
Around 75% of people who try psychotherapy find it beneficial, which I think speaks volumes about its impact. Therapy can genuinely improve emotional and psychological well-being, and studies even show it’s linked to positive changes in both the brain and body. It’s a reminder of how transformative this work can be, helping people feel better and live more balanced lives.
What if I don’t know what to talk about? Or What if my problems feel too small or too big?
We will always have something to discuss. One of the benefits of therapy is that we can explore new techniques and skills together during our sessions. Remember, no problem is too small or too large. If it’s bothering you, it’s a problem that hasn’t been solved yet. And if a problem feels overwhelming, I have good news: we can tackle it one step at a time. Together, we can lay the foundation and gather the right tools to help you climb your mountain.
